New prairie CSEs
The Saskatchewan and Manitoba brokers’ associations have appointed new
chief staff executives.
In Saskatchewan, Derek Lothian has
taken over from Ernie Gaschler who has
retired after 25 years as executive director.
Lothian is an association, and public
affairs executive, with more than 13 years’
senior leadership experience. In 2015 he
was nominated by Colleges Ontario for
the Premiers Awards, which recognize
grads who make important social and
economic contributions. At the time,
Lothian, at 27, was one of the youngest
VPs in the 144-year history of Canadian
Manufacturers & Exporters, Canada’s
largest industry association. He founded
and led the Saskatchewan Manufacturing Council, and was founding chair of
the Saskatchewan Manufacturing Centre
of Excellence, a multi-million-dollar
public training initiative. The same year
CBC named him as one of their Future
40. Most recently he was president of Lothian & Associates Management Group,
an executive advisory and management
practice, specializing in organizational
strategy, corporate affairs, early-stage
M&A, and partnership development. Its
clients span private and publicly-traded
businesses, national and provincial associations, academic institutions, First
Nations, and economic development
In Manitoba Grant Wainikka starts as
CEO on Jan. 2, replacing Dave Schioler.
He has more than 20 years of progressively senior experience working in
both the private and public sectors.
Most recently Wainikka taught at the
Asper School of Business, University of
Manitoba. Prior to that he worked in the
Manitoba telecommunications industry
for 15 years, advancing to director of
marketing, midwest region, for Rogers
Communications. Earlier, Wainikka
worked with the Manitoba government
as a special assistant to several ministers.
The Insurance Brokers Association of Canada rotates the locations of its annual
meetings and this year was B.C.’s turn to host. Brokers and association staff from
across Canada gathered in Nanaimo, and kicked off three days of meetings with a
reception on Sept. 26.
